The organization that I will be pitching for is called, Save the Children. This organization has been incredibly successful over the years. It has been established for 100 years, which has allowed it to complete many missions to increase opportunities for children, and protect them from any harms. Save The Children has a multitude of first responders who are dedicated to transforming the lives of severely underprivileged children in current desperations. Some of the main focus’s that Save The Children have are on children’s health, education, protection, policies and advocacies, and emergency responses for children. Some current responses that Save The Children is involved in now are with the children who are being torn apart from their families along the Mexican border, dealing with the collection of problems dealing with the humanitarian crisis’s in Yemen, and responding to children who are displaced in sub-zero conditions. I thought these were incredible feats that this organization has done and currently does because not only are they helping children, but they are directly responding to current day issues. While it is important to always be there to protect and influence children positively, it is also important to help children who are in the most need at the most recent times.
In their 100 years of operation, Save the Children has helped around 134 million children in 120 countries. I find this to be incredibly impressive. Of the 134 million children that have been helped by this organization, many of them were from the United States of America, Africa, Asia, the Greater Middle East and Eurasia Russia region, and Latin America and the Caribbean. It is obvious that this particular organization stretches its arms all over the world to help millions of children.
On the Save The Children’s website, they post many ways for people to help children. Those possibilities include: sponsoring children, buying gifts, becoming a monthly donor, planning a legacy with Save the Children, supporting women who lead in the organization, along with many other ways displayed on the website. In addition to ways other people can help, I also found many archives of annual reports that portrayed where exactly the organization used its expenditures. About 87% of its expenditures were obviously done in program services, which showed how well the company not only helped children, but also supported those working the many hours to save and help children.
While I do not have direct experience with this organization, I do have experience in years of research conducted on children’s rights, and laws surrounding children. My passion has always been to work with children. I love to learn about children in every aspect, and I deeply enjoy working with kids, whether that means directly or indirectly. Thus, this organization posed a great deal of importance to me because I saw how much previous and future success can be done from a such strong organization as this Save The Children.

This organization seems to take a more general approach towards the betterment of the lives of children across the globe, and it appears, from your description, to be a rather large organization - not unlike the Red Cross. Of course, I'm not suggesting that the Red Cross and Save the Children are on an equal level - indeed, Save the Children seem to better know what can be improved the most with donation money. Do you have any specific examples or case studies of Save the Children's influence on children's lives worldwide? If you have any articles, feel free to reply to this comment with some - I'd really be interested in learning more about what they have done.
ReplyDeleteI am curious, though, as to what you mean when you say that 87% of Save the Children expenditures have been in "program services". What exactly does program services entail? What I mean to say is, how does Save the Children distribute their program funds across what I assume is multiple projects that are happening concurrently?
I am looking forward to learning more about this organization in class tomorrow.
It feels good to see that a couple of people in the class are interested in children’s affairs. I can’t wait to learn more about this organization tomorrow. You said, in your last paragraph, that you love working with children. Same! Just last semester, I tutored approximately twenty elementary students, and it was fun. The children I worked with were all eager to learn new things. I could see it in their faces. The problem, though, is that not all children have the opportunity to enjoy the same privilege. Some, unfortunately, can’t afford to receive proper education. This is very sad.
ReplyDeleteYou also talked about the U.S-Mexican border crisis. This was a big issue a few years ago. I just can’t imagine why people would choose to separate a child from his or her parent. This, to me, is horrendous. “More than 5,400 children,” according to NBC news, “were separated from their parents [in the U.S-Mexican border]”. This is a lot! Fortunately, this organization—as you said—is doing its best to tackle issues like this. They serve as a support system for children in need.
My only hope, though, is that you talk a bit more about something less obvious tomorrow. There are many child-based organizations out there, and I know there’s something unique about this particular organization. I hope you find that thing and deliver it to the class tomorrow. Good luck.
